Tummy tuck surgery, also known as “abdominoplasty,” improves the shape of the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the abdominal muscles. The midsection is one of the most difficult areas to target with diet and exercise alone, and this procedure gives patients the confidence and comfort that comes with a flatter and more attractive abdominal appearance.

You will look much smarter because your clothes drape better on your body.

Rash or chafing caused by loose skin will be eliminated.

Bulges and roll will be eliminated due to surgery. This will improve your self confidence.

There are different types of tummy tuck depending upon the areas and extent of excess skin

  • Conventional abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is the commonest procedure where the incision is in the bikini line and a small incision around the umbilicus. This is most common procedure.
  • Lipoabdominoplasty is a modern innovation where tummy tuck is combined with 3 dimensional liposuction allowing waist sculpting, removal of love handles and flattening of tummy.
  • Circumferential abdominoplasty is a form of tummy tuck where the incision extends around the waist to the back allowing removal of loose skin from sides of abdomen and buttock lift. This procedure is indicated in patients with massive weight loss or post bariatric weight loss who has excess skin all around the tummy with buttock sagging.
  • Reverse abdominoplasty is a procedure where the incision is placed under the breasts. This is required in male or female patients with excess skin that is mostly located in the upper abdomen above the naval.
  • Mini abdominoplasty is a modified procedure performed in patients with limited problems such as isolated loose skin below the belly button and in patients who have lax and bulging muscle with good skin quality. This procedure involves a small bikini line incision and the umbilicus is not incised. The muscle repair if required, is performed with a small incision above the umbilicus.
  • Fleur de Lis abdominoplasty is an extensive procedure where a bikini line incision is combined with a long central abdominal incision. This is required in patient with massive weight loss where they have excess skin in vertical and horizontal direction.

Latest Technologies used in Tummy Tuck

The most important innovation in tummy tuck is the "liposculpture". Ultrasonic assisted liposuction or Vaser assisted liposuction allows sculpting of the tummy and waist. This also facilitates tummy tuck making it easier to contour the tummy and expediting the procedure. "Lipoabdominoplasty" or "LABP" gives a long term outcome making it easy for patient to maintain their shape.

Endoscopic - assisted tummy tuck is yet another innovation that has allowed minimal approach abdominoplasty. Endoscopy uses a small telescope that is introduced through belly button and it allows muscle repair with a small bikini line incision.

The entire surgery is performed under General Anesthesia. The anesthetic medication required is less and the patient recovers quickly immediately after the surgery.

Tumescent technique is yet another innovation where the fat is transfused with a cocktail of medication that makes the procedure literally bloodless and also provides significant local anesthesia minimizing the General anesthetic medications.

FAQ's

Approximately two to three weeks after a tummy tuck, most patients can return to a desk job. About three to four weeks after a tummy tuck, most patients can return to a job that entails a significant amount of lifting or pulling.

At about three to four weeks, you should be able to go back to light exercise. Every patient is different and heals at a different rate. About six to eight weeks, most people can do 25% of their routine pre-operative workout. At about eight to ten weeks, most people can do 50% of the usual pre-operative workout. At about ten to twelve weeks, most people can do 75% of the routine pre-operative workout. At about twelve to fourteen weeks, most people can do 100% of the usual pre-operative workout.

Everyone’s pain is different after a tummy tuck. Everyone heals differently, and everyone has different tolerances to pain. Almost all patient’s pain is controlled with oral medications. Usually by the second or third week, most of the pain is gone, and you will only rarely need to take pain medication.

Absolutely. Many of our patients look at a comprehensive “mommy makeover” and combine abdominoplasty with other procedures. This means less time in hospital and less time recovering than from separate operations. Liposuction is often combined with tummy tuck, to help refine the contour of the stomach, flanks and other area.

Abdominoplasty is also often combined with other body contouring surgeries, such as breast surgeries, including breast augmentation/enlargement, breast lift and breast reduction, for a complete “mommy makeover” or lifts.

By combining one or more procedures, you may achieve a more dramatic and enhanced overall outcome.

We feel that you should wait to have the tummy tuck until after you are finished having children, as this will help to both maximize and prolong the results achieved with the procedure.

  • Stretch marks are not necessarily removed, but because there is now LESS SKIN after a Tummy Tuck, there will be less areas of stretch marked skin (ask what to expect and recognise this varies, Remember, as noted above, this surgery is more about shaping, contouring and tightening/flatting the belly area RATHER than removing stretch marks.
  • However, there is LESS SKIN after surgery SO there is likely a reduction in the volume of skin containing stretch marks.
  • Other options for treating stretch marks include Skin lasers, skin needling/DermaPen or LED treatments as well as certain active skin solutions.

For liposuction, breast augmentation, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), and other similar procedures, your initial results will be visible immediately. However, within a very short time you will experience a swelling that will mask further results for the first few weeks. Additional minor swelling can take many months (and sometimes a full year) to resolve before you are left with your final results. The use of appropriate compression garments is important to achieve the best possible result, and our staff will guide you along the way.
